the-theme-is

A group music blog of weekly themes. Each week, the moderator will pick a new theme and the members will post songs that fit, especially rare gems others may have not heard before.

We will call attention to forgotten gems and songs that have stood the test of time!

(We wish to stand out from the other blogs out there with this collection of rarities.)

Telephone - Captain Beefheart (1980)

And I strangled
And I ripped the cord
And I saw the bone
And I heard these tweetin’ things
N twinkling lights
N there was nobody home
Where are all those nerve endings coming out of the bone?

Tom Waits - Telephone Call From Istanbul

I love the organ part that comes in at the end.

Glenn Campbell - Wichita Lineman

I’ve always assumed that the song referred to Telephone lines although they could be power lines.

Any excuse to play this is a good one though

No One Here Available - Andy Partridge (1985)

XTC frontman A.P. recorded this reggae-tinged novelty outgoing answering machine tune during the mid-eighties, heyday of the cassette ansaphone.

“Here it is, that Jacob Marley and the Wailers answerphone message. One of a series I made for my then brother in law in 1985. Stick it on your phone, feel free. Hearing it now, it sounds more like Robert Morley and his waders.” - A.P.

Chris Montez - Call Me

I hate to be a “know it all”, but this it the real version of Call Me.

Well perhaps that’s a bit snotty to say.  It is the U.S. hit version although it has been recorded countless times.  I have a special attachment to this song as it was often playing on my Grandmother’s 8 track player as we drove through the streets of Pasadena, CA in the late 60s.  She had only one 8 track tape which seemed to be some A&M collection featuring easy listening greats like Herb Alpert, Sergio Mendes and Chris Montez
